Why should I buy travel insurance?

Cover Overseas Medical Costs

When you go abroad, you won't have access to a healthcare system like our NHS. If you or your party becomes ill, the cost of treatment could run into hundreds or thousands of pounds.

Travel insurance could help cover this cost so you’re not left with a hefty medical bill you may struggle to pay.

Cancellation Cover

You’ve likely saved long and hard for your two weeks in the sun. But if you need to cancel your trip - for example, due to unknown medical issues -travel insurance can help you recover the costs so you’re not left out of pocket.

Lost or Stolen Luggage

There’s nothing more frustrating. You’ve arrived at your dream destination, but your luggage hasn’t. Or your new camera gets pinched on the train as you’re interrailing across Europe.

Where the airline is not responsible for the cost of replacing your lost or stolen belongings, Travel insurance may help.

Filter your results by Defaqto rating

We show Defaqto star ratings with every result. This gives you a quick summary of the level of features a policy could provide.

Find providers with enhanced Covid-19 cover

Some of our providers offer cancellation cover if you fall ill with Covid-19 and are unable to travel. This is subject to medical certification or an official test result.

Types of Travel Insurance

Travel insurance usually falls under three types. Each offer unique features and levels of cover.

Single Trip

Single trip travel insurance can cover you for travel to one or more destinations as part of one trip. Single trip holiday cover could be the right choice if you're only going away once or twice a year.

Annual Multi-trip

Annual Multi Trip travel insurance will cover you for as many trips as you like in a 12-month period. Each trip will have a daily limit, so it's important to check before buying. This can often provide good value if you do a lot of travelling over the course of a year.

Backpacker

Backpacker travel insurance provides cover for a single trip usually spanning many months. This makes it a good option for gap-year travellers or explorers.

Extra cover? No problem…

Winter Sports Insurance

Insurance for winter sports includes cover for skiing and snowboarding, loss of ski equipment or extreme weather.

Standard travel insurance policies are unlikely to include this cover. Select 'winter sports' and we'll only return quotes that provide winter sports travel insurance.

Business Trip Insurance

This may cover business items such as laptops, mobile phones or clothing. It could also include expenses incurred due to travel delays.

You can take out an annual multi-trip policy to cover several business trips in a year. But you should still select business cover.

Cruise Insurance Cover

A cruise travel insurance policy provides benefits for cruise travellers. For example, this could include missed shore visits due to illness or extreme weather.

Cruise holidays are not usually covered under a standard travel insurance policy. Be sure to specify cruise cover when you compare travel insurance quotes.

What does travel insurance cover?

Medical expenses

The cost of private medical treatment abroad can be expensive. Travel insurance can help pay towards treatment if you need to visit a doctor or go to hospital.

Holiday cancellation

Sometimes it's unavoidable to cancel your trip if you or your party fall ill. A travel insurance policy could help you cover the cost, so you don't lose money.

Delays in travel

You may be able to claim expenses on your travel insurance if your flight gets delayed. Speak to your airline in the first instance.

Lost or stolen luggage

It's bad enough if your bags get lost, or your new camera gets stolen. Your travel insurance policy can help recover the cost of replacing your belongings.

Help in an emergency

If you find yourself in need of urgent medical help, travel insurance could be a lifesaver. Many insurers have a 24-hour helpline for advice, such as where to go for treatment or how you can get home.

Personal liability

Like at home, sometimes accidents can happen when we're abroad. You may find yourself liable to pay if you cause damage to possessions or injure someone while on your trip.

Avoidable cancellation

Cancellation cover forms part of a travel insurance policy. But you're unlikely to get cover for avoidable situations. Examples include not securing your visa, passport, or documentation before travelling.

Travelling against government advice

It's a good idea to check Government foreign travel advice before travelling. This ensures your intended destination is safe to visit. The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) identifies countries with safety concerns. If they recommend not travelling to a country for any reason, you are unlikely to get cover.

Reckless behaviour or intoxication

You're much less likely to succeed in a claim with your provider due to reckless behaviour. This could include losing your luggage or money due to excessive drinking or drugs.

Medical conditions you haven't declared

This is a big one. Your provider won't pay out if you have a pre-existing medical condition but haven't declared it. It may not always cost more to cover such conditions.

Travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions

A pre-existing medical condition is a condition or injury that you've been diagnosed with. This includes if you have had, or are currently receiving, treatment. Examples include high blood pressure, diabetes, mental health, and broken bones. You must tell us if you or anyone in your party has any conditions where test results are currently pending.

Standard policies don't always cover pre-existing medical conditions. But this shouldn't end your trip.

Many of our standard panel of insurers can provide quotes for pre-existing conditions. If your condition is more severe, we have access to providers who specialise in providing cover for those with certain pre-existing conditions.

It may not always cost more to cover your medical conditions. Insurers may not pay for medical treatments or costs to get home if it's for something you did not declare.

Do I need travel insurance if I have a Global Health Insurance Card?

Yes – this does not replace travel insurance. A Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) lets you get state healthcare in Europe at a reduced cost or sometimes for free. It does not supply cover for your luggage, accommodation, or flights. If you’re travelling to a country outside the GHIC scheme, then it won’t supply cover for anything.

If you have a UK European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) it will be valid until the expiry date on the card. Once it expires, you’ll need to apply for a GHIC to replace it.
