Wonderful Walks for You & Your Dog in The Lake District

20th July 2018

Here at Compare Cover, we're lucky to be a stone's throw away from the captivating Lake District National Park. Located in the North West of England, the Lake District is renowned amongst keen walkers for its dramatic scenery with rolling hills, imposing mountains, and of course, vast lakes.

If you're looking for a 'staycation' this summer, the Lake District National Park could be the ideal playground for you and your doggy companion, with lots of places to see and things to do, with a plethora of dog-friendly pubs, cottages and restaurants.

To celebrate National Parks Week, which will run from Monday 23rd July to Sunday 29th July, we've decided to take a look at some great walking routes for you and your furry friend to enjoy in our favourite national park.

The Four Bears Marmalade March

Distance: 5 miles

At approximately 5 miles, this route offers walkers the chance to enjoy everything the Ullswater Valley has to offer. Starting from Pooley Bridge or Dalemain Mansion, it allows walkers to take in the sights along the banks of the River Eamont. The route leads walkers through historic pasture lands and the charming village of Dacre which boasts a castle and an ancient church with mysterious stone 'bears'. After your walk, take a visit to the splendid Dalemain House and sample their tasty award-winning marmalade. If you eat outside in the courtyard, all dogs are welcome on a lead.

Barrow Fell

Distance: 3 miles

The Barrow Fell walking route is perfect for a gentler walk, while still offering spectacular views. At a modest height of 455m, this route should suit dogs that can no longer tear across the fells but still enjoy pottering along. When at the top, you'll be rewarded with superb 360-degree views over Bassenthwaite Lake, Braithwaite Village, Derwent Water and Keswick.

Minimise Queueing and Waiting Time

The Derwentwater Walk

Distance: 10 miles

At 10 miles long, this is a lengthy walk, but don't let this put you off! Taking you a full circuit around Derwentwater, often referred to as 'Queen of the Lakes', this walk consists of mainly flat paths, so shouldn't be too demanding for your dog, but will offer a great deal of exercise for him and you! Commencing from The Moot Hall in Keswick, you can find plenty of information for tourists and maps to guide you on your trek.

The Ullswater Way

Distance: 20 miles

The Ullswater Way is a 20-mile walking route around Ullswater. The route can be walked in either direction and from any starting point. The terrain around this walking route is relatively simple to navigate with your dog as it is quite flat, but you don't have to tackle the whole 20 miles if you or your dog are not up for it. If you're looking for a shorter stroll, you can start your journey with a cruise on the Ullswater Steamer and discover some of the quaint villages around the lake, including Glenridding and Pooley Bridge, where there are many shorter walking routes available. Dogs are welcome on-board the steamer for a small fee and then you can sit back, relax and admire the amazing scenery.

Caring for Your Dog on Your Walk

In the Lakes there are a few thinfgs you should be aware of, including making sure your dog doesn't scare farm animals such as sheep and cattle, so keep your dog on a lead around these animals. Keep your pooch hydrated with plenty of cool water when out and about too and perhaps research some dog-friendly pubs and restaurants along the way that will provide a great place for a rest should you or your dog need it.

We're sure you'll have a great time exploring everything the Lake District has to offer with your faithful companion, but should your pooch become ill or injured on his doggy day out, pet insurance could help him get the treatment he needs.
