The Top 10 Ways To Get Your #LifeSorted
28th December 2016
Having your life sorted means different things to different people. Most people will tell you that young adulthood should be about living life to the max, finding love and taking the first steps up the career ladder. After that, marriage, a mortgage, kids and saving enough money for a comfortable retirement become important to living a fulfilled life.
But do these assumptions still hold true in modern society? To answer this question, we decided to ask the people of this country to define what having your life sorted means to you. The survey, conducted by OnePoll, targeted 2,000 people across the UK between the ages of 18 and 55. Here are your top 10 choices:
1. Feeling secure with your finances and savings
Women (78%) picked financial security as their number one definition of having your life sorted, with 70% of men feeling the same. It was also the number one choice across every age group, with people aged 55+ stating it was the most important (79%).
2. Owning a property
Rocketing house prices and dropping wages have made home ownership a hot topic over the last few years. So it's little surprise that buying a property was the second most popular definition of having your life sorted for both men and women across the UK. The only exception was 18-24 year olds, who valued more having a good job that provides satisfying work.
3. Being happy with your health and fitness
Busy lives make eating healthily and exercising difficult for many people and being happy with health and fitness featured high on the list of life sorted definitions. More women (53%) than men (44%) said health and fitness was the key to getting life sorted. But slightly more 25-34 year olds preferred being in a stable relationship (44%) to being fit and healthy (43%).
4. Being in a stable and serious relationship
Although it was close, more women (44%) than men (39%) picked being in a stable relationship as a key measure to being life sorted. Finding true love was more important to 25-34 year olds (44%) than any other age group polled, with people aged 45-54 only choosing being in a relationship 39% of the time.
5. Earning a comfortable amount of money
It's said that money can't buy you happiness but per our results it's the fifth most popular definition of life sorted. That said, people aged 55 and over valued paying off their mortgage (42%), having a family (36%) and owning a vehicle (35%) higher than earning a comfortable amount of money (35%).
6. Having a family
It was tight, but having a family was higher on the list of life sorted priorities for men than women. Having a family did not feature in the top 10 life sorted definitions for 18-24 year olds, who valued owning a vehicle higher as a life sorted benchmark.
7. Paying off all debt/student debts
Being debt free was chosen by 35% of people polled, with more women than men agreeing that paying off debt was a life sorted priority. Millennials have other concerns than paying off debt, with people aged 18-24 believe being happy with your appearance is more important.
8. Paying off your mortgage
More women (37%) than men (33%) chose paying off a mortgage in our poll. Although owning a property was chosen by 50% of 18-24 year olds, paying the mortgage off didn't feature at all in their top 10 life sorted picks. More people aged 55+ (42%) selected paying off their mortgage than any other age group.
9. Having a good job that provides satisfying work
Job satisfaction is more important to women (38%) than men (30%) as a life sorted criteria. As people get older, it seems having a good job becomes less important. Among 19-24 year olds it was the second most popular life sorted definition (54%), second only to financial security (73%). This fell to a low of 33% for people aged 35-44, before dropping out of the top 10 completely for people aged 55 and over.
10. Owning a vehicle
Owing a set of wheels means a lot to 18-24 year olds (39%), more than any other age group polled. Just 29% of 35-44 year olds and 30% of 45-54 year olds felt they needed one to have their life sorted. It was nearly an even split between men (35%) and women (33%) saying a car was a factor towards living a more fulfilled life.
