At Compare Cover we are delighted to announce that we are title sponsor for Penrith's annual Winter Droving festival! Set to take place on Saturday 27th October, the event marks the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the dark nights.
The Winter Droving has quickly established itself as a key event in the Cumbrian calendar. The usually peaceful market town of Penrith comes alive with fire, animation, music and masquerade as thousands flock to celebrate winter and the town's agricultural heritage. It's a brilliant time of year to take a trip to the Lake District and enjoy an event completely out of the ordinary!
Dubbed a 'right rural celebration' by its organiser Eden Arts, the unique spectacle kicks off with a fancy-dress competition (for dogs!) which should give you an indicator of the kind of day ahead!
You can also expect an array of exciting attractions including fantastic live music headlined by the stomping 6-piece Electric Swing Circus and street performers across 5 stages.
If that wasn't enough to tempt you, there's a traditional Cumbrian food and craft market where you can sample the delicacies Cumbria has to offer, from homemade chutneys to warming mulled wine.
The winter showcase brings quintessentially British eccentricity in the form of the weird and wacky 'Drovers Cup' where local groups and businesses battle it out in comical competitions such as tug-o-war, sausage eating contests, egg throwing and hay bale racing, with the winner being awarded the coveted cup.
Never one to miss out on the fun, we've gathered a few of our team to try and knock last year's victors Cumbria Fire & Rescue & The Croglin Vampires from the top spot and take home the trophy!
As night falls, the Winter Droving draws to a close with a spectacular torch and lantern procession. A mystical masked parade takes over the town bearing fire torches, animal lanterns and animated costumes with visitors encouraged to dress up and join the herd.
At Compare Cover, we couldn't resist getting involved in the action. We'll be offering spectators the chance to visit our 'fantabulous photo booth' where you can get your friends together, raid our prop box, dress up in all your finery and pose for a photo to take away as a reminder of the day.
So, don't be shy, head over and say hello, get dressed up and strike a pose!
