Alternative Valentine's Day getaways

Published: 01 February 2019 | Last updated: 5 November 2020

Valentine's day is the perfect time to whisk your significant other away for a romantic holiday. While many couples jet off to Paris or Venice to celebrate their love for each other, we've come up with some alternative, but equally enchanting getaways to inspire your next trip.

Cruise down Lake Komani, Albania

Reminiscent of the Norwegian Fjords, Lake Komani located in Northern Albania, is a nature lovers paradise. Complete with narrow gorges, green hills and still turquoise waters, this breath-taking destination is sure to get your heart racing.

If you and your loved one share a hobby for hiking, a one-day hike from Valbona to Thethi in the Accursed Mountains is a great way to explore the picturesque landscape on foot.

But if you prefer a more relaxing way to enjoy the panorama, hop onboard the Ferry Berisha for a spectacular ferry ride from Koman to Fierze which has been described by some as the 'most beautiful boat trip in Europe'. You can even book a private trip for just you and your partner.

Stroll through the cobbled streets of Annecy, France

With quaint cobbled streets and winding canals, it's little wonder Annecy is dubbed the 'Venice of the Alps'. A beautiful Alpine town in south-eastern France, Annecy is much less crowded than its Italian counterpart, and is the perfect place for a laid-back break with your loved one.

Rent a bike and spend the day exploring all this amazing destination has to offer. Cross the Pont de Amours (The Lovers' Bridge) before taking in the charming churches such as The Église Notre-Dame-de-Liesse. Then relax with a cup of coffee in one of the many waterside cafes.

And why not visit two countries in one trip? Catch a bus and you could be strolling along lakeside promenades in the Swiss capital of Geneva in under an hour.

Get away from it all in Glenbrittle, Scotland

With more people now choosing to stay closer to home rather than going abroad for their holiday, why not take advantage of what the UK has to offer?

The Fairy Pools in Glenbrittle on the Isle of Skye is made up of beautiful rock pools of crystal-clear spring water fed by a series of waterfalls from the Cuillin Mountains.

It's free to visit at any time of the year and visitors can take in the sights on a 2.4 km trek along gravel paths bordered with grass, heather, peat and rocks up towards the largest waterfall. And if you're feeling brave enough, why not go for a dip in the icy cold waters?

Visit the vineyards of Puglia, Italy

Perugia can be found in the Umbria region of Italy and is steeped in medieval history. Must see sights include the Palazzo dei Priori, a lovely medieval structure dating back to the 13th century  containing an interesting collection of Renaissance art, and the Piazza IV Novembre, a popular gathering place in the heart of the city.

If you're partial to a glass or two of vino, a visit to the award-winning Tenuta di Castelbuono sculpture and winery located in nearby Bevagna could provide the perfect opportunity to raise a glass to your significant other. The winery is housed in a unique copper sculpture, called The Carapace, which was designed by one of the most renowned Italian artists, Arnaldo Pomodoro and is inspired by the hilly landscape that surrounds it.

Gaze at the Northern Lights in Rovaniemi, Finnish Lapland

For something a little different, Finland's Lapland is the perfect getaway for those with a love of adventure. Known for its vast wilderness, ski resorts and alluring national parks, a trip to the Finnish Lapland is sure to be unforgettable.

The official hometown of Santa Claus, Rovaniemi is a magical place to visit whatever time of year. There's plenty to do to keep you and your beau busy, from snowmobiling to dog sledding to reindeer sleigh rides. As night falls, you can snuggle up in the Arctic Snow Hotel or watch as the Northern Lights dance in the sky in a glass igloo. And if you're whisking your other half away to tie the knot, where better to get married than in a snow chapel?

When you want to escape the hustle and bustle of Rovaniemi, there are many fairy-tale-like forests just outside the town centre where you stroll hand in hand in a true winter wonderland.
