Alternative Valentine's Day Getaways

01 February 2019

Love it or hate it, Valentine's day is just around the corner and it's the perfect time to whisk your significant other away for a romantic trip.

While many couples jet off to Paris or Venice to celebrate their love for each other, we've come up with some alternative, but equally enchanting getaways. And even if you're not loved up, why not treat yourself to a weekend city break? You deserve it!

Cruise down Lake Komani, Albania

Reminiscent of the Norwegian Fjords, Lake Komani located in Northern Albania, is a nature lovers paradise. Complete with narrow gorges, green hills and still turquoise waters, this breath-taking destination is sure to get your heart racing.

If you and your loved one share a hobby for hiking, a one-day hike from Valbona to Thethi in the Accused Mountains is a great way to explore the picturesque landscape on foot.

But if you prefer a more relaxing way to enjoy the panorama, hop onboard the Ferry Berisha for a spectacular ferry ride from Koman to Fierze has been described by some as the 'most beautiful boat trip in Europe'. You can even book a private trip for just you and your partner.

Stroll through the cobbled streets of Annecy, France

With quaint cobbled streets and winding canals, it's little wonder Annecy is dubbed the 'French Venice'. A beautiful Alpine town in south-eastern France, Annecy is much less crowded than its Italian counterpart, and is the perfect place for a laid-back break with your loved one.

Rent a bike and spend the day exploring all this amazing destination has to offer. Cross the Pont de Amours (the lover's bridge) before taking in the Imperial Palace and the baroque Cathedral of Saint-Pierre. Then relax with a cup of coffee in one of the many waterside cafes.

And why not visit two countries in one trip? Geneva in Switzerland is just a 45-minute bus journey away.

Get away from it all in Glenbrittle, Scotland

If you're still feeling the pinch after Christmas, why not visit somewhere a little closer to home? The UK has plenty to offer when it comes to quaint and romantic destinations. The Fairy Pools in Glenbrittle on the Isle of Skye is made up of beautiful rock pools of crystal-clear spring water fed by a series of waterfalls from the Cuillin Mountains.

It's free to visit at any time of the year and visitors can take in the sights on a trek along gravel paths bordered with grass, heather, peat and rocks up towards the largest waterfall. And if you're feeling brave enough, why not go for a dip in the icy cold waters?

Visit the vineyards of Puglia, Italy

Puglia can be found in the Umbria region of Italy and is steeped in medieval history. Must see sights include the Palazzo Dei Priori, a lovely medieval structure dating back to the 13th century, the Church of San Pietro, containing an interesting collection of Renaissance art, and the Piazza IV November, a popular gathering place in the heart of the city.

The second largest wine producer in Italy, Puglia is famous for authentic Italian vineyards. Visit the award-winning Tenuta di Castelbuono winery located in Bevagna, in the province of Perugia. The winery was designed by one of the most renowned Italian artists, Arnaldo Pomodoro and is inspired by the hilly landscape that surrounds it.

Gaze at the Northern Lights in Rovaniemi, Finnish Lapland

Something a little different, Finland's Lapland is the perfect getaway for those with a love of adventure. Known for its vast wilderness, ski resorts and alluring national parks, a trip to the Finnish Lapland is sure to be unforgettable.

Visit Rovaniemi, the capital of Lapland, where there's plenty to do to keep you busy, from snowmobiling to dog sledding to reindeer sleigh rides. As night falls, you can snuggle up in the Ice Hotel or an igloo and watch as the Northern Lights dance in the sky. And if you're whisking your other half away to tie the knot, where better to get married than in a snow chapel?

When you want to escape the hustle and bustle of Rovaniemi, there are many fairy-tale-like forests just outside the town centre where you stroll hand in hand in a true winter wonderland.

If you do decide to jet off on a romantic getaway this Valentines' day, make sure you're covered should the unexpected happen.
